Landstown Middle School Bands
There are many performance opportunities for students of all levels. Below is a list of all the performance opportunities at LMS.
Concert Band
Concert band is the traditional band setting. Students of all levels are welcome to play in the LMS Concert Band. We divide the band into 3 levels.
Beginning Band
This is our beginning band. All 6th grade and 7th grade developing musicians are in this group.
We will do an instrument fitting at the beginning of the school year to help students choose the instrument on which they have the most aptitude.
7th grade students who progress quickly, can join the Intermediate Band .
Red Band performs at Winter Concert and Spring Concert.
Intermediate Band
This is our intermediate band comprised of 7th grade students with an approximate year of band experience.
Members of the Intermediate Band are required to participate in the following activities: Winter Concert, Assessment Concert, and Spring Concert.
Students are encouraged to participate in the following activities: All-City Band, All-District Band, Solo and Ensemble, and The Marching Lancers. For specific concert and rehearsal dates, please refer to the Calendar of Events.
Lancer Band
The Lancer Band is the highest performance band at Landstown Middle School, comprised of eighth grade and select 7th grade students. The Lancer Band performs grade II/III Literature at the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors at District Band Assessment, and represents Landstown Middle School for its eligibility as a Blue Ribbon School. Members of this ensemble are expected to have a firm understanding of all key signatures, basic rhythms, and advance musical notation.
Members of the Lancer Band are required to participate in the following activities: Fall Concert, Winter Concert, Assessment Concerts, Spring Concert, Pyramid Concerts, Military Child Concert, and Solo and Ensemble. For specific concert and rehearsal dates, please refer to the Calendar of Events.
Additional options for Lancer Band members are: District Band Auditions, Marching band, basketball band, jazz band, and area honor bands.

Jazz Band
The Lancer Jazz Band at Landstown Middle School will provide students the opportunity to explore music outside of the classical realm. Improvisation skills will be encouraged, but not required. The membership of the Jazz Band is selected through auditions in the fall. This group meets exclusively after/before school and participation in all rehearsals is required. The jazz ensemble studies and performs music in various jazz styles including but not exclusive to Swing, Be-Bop, Cool Jazz, Hard Bop, avant-garde, Free Jazz, and Jazz-Rock Fusion.
When there is a sufficient amount of student interest, the Lancer Jazz Band will be organized on a yearly basis. Entrance into Jazz Band will be by invitation or audition only. The Jazz Band will meet exclusively after school and perform for local civic organizations and concerts. To be eligible for participation a student must audition for the Band Director and be available to make all required rehearsals. Vacancies may be filled by invitation. Instrumentation is limited to: 2-4 alto saxophones, 2-3 tenor saxophones, 1-2 baritone saxophone, 3-5 trombones, 3-6 trumpets, 1 piano, 2-3 percussionists (as needed), electric bass and guitar.

Marching Band
The Marching Lancers is a performing ensemble open to any seventh and eighth grade students who are a member of the Landstown Middle School Band Program. This band meets exclusively after school, and all rehearsals are required. Members of this ensemble have the opportunity to represent Landstown Middle School at local parades, home football games, and school pep-rallies. The Marching Lancers are known for their enthusiastic and musical support of the Athletic Department at Landstown Middle School.
Students will be provided a marching band uniform. They must provide their own solid black shoes and socks.
