Attendance Policy
Band is a co-curricular activity in the VBCPS course description manual. In that manual it lists required and graded elements of band class happen both during the school day and outside of the school day.
These outside of school events are integral to the fulfillment of the Virginia Standards of Learning for Instrumental Music. Outside of school rehearsals allow our band classes to combine and work collaboratively to prepare concert selections, bring in guest conductors and specialists to work with our student musicians, and perform for our families and community!
We have no second string or understudies. if a student is absent from a rehearsal or performance they are not just missing our on learning and performance opportunities, all the other members of the band are negatively impacted as well.
In an effort to assist in coordinating family and band schedules, all of our rehearsals and performances are posted by June of the previous school year. Minor changes may come along the way, but the vast majority of the calendar will remain unchanged.
Band students are strong scholars and involved in their school and community. We understand that there will be scheduling conflicts. Please communicate with the director in advance and in most cases, we can meet somewhere in the middle when it comes to rehearsal schedules.
Because emergencies do happen, if a student is unable to make a rehearsal or performance due to circumstances outside of their control, they will receive a make up assignment for the missed graded event.

Grades
Retakes:
Students may resubmit any assignment an unlimited number of times within a marking period until they receive a satisfactory grade.
Late Work:
Students may turn in late work for full credit at anytime within a marking period. After that grading period ends, late work from that grading period will no longer be accepted.
Make Up Work:
Since all work can be turned in late, there is no difference between late work and make up work. It all can be turned in for full credit at any time within a marking period.
If a student has excused absences at the very end of a marking period, an extension may be given on a case-by-case basis for work that was due during their absence.
It is the student's responsibility to obtain copies of missing/make up work. All assignments are listed in the "assignments" section of the website and copies of the papers are in the Share Drive. Additional copies of the assignments are not maintained in the band room. Students without home access to the printer can print in the library.
Extra Credit:
Due to the liberal make up, late, and retakes policies, no extra credit is offered in band.
